William's Room
Named for William Murphy, this room is located on the second floor with windows facing east for that wonderful sunrise each morning.

William Murphy, 18, son of Dr. M. G. and Ermell Porter Murphy of Morgantown met instant death on August 25,1930, when a gravel truck he was driving overturned four miles east of Whiteland. William was caught under the heavy truck body.
No one saw the accident and it wasn't reported until Clarence Green, a driver for the Franklin Baking Company, came along and discovered the wreck. The Johnson county sheriff and coroner were called and conducted an investigation before the body was removed. His father was notified and hastened to the scene.
William attended Martinsville High School and had just graduated. He planned to enter Indiana University that fall to study medicine. He was an outstanding member of his class and had been a popular player on the Martinsville basketball team.
This job was the young man's first day at driving a truck. He had been employed by Joe Woods of Woods Dodge-Plymouth agency during the summer. Mr. Woods was, also, a road grading contractor and William had often asked him to be placed as a driver of one of the trucks. It was believed that he was hurrying to get to the Whiteland job on time and veered off the road. In trying to recover he, apparently, returned to the pavement too quickly and the truck overturned.
His death, naturally,
prostrated his family and was a terrible shock to the entire community, as he
and his family were well-known and very well liked. Besides the parents, he was
survived by sisters Mary and Miriam and brother Porter.
